Obituary

Bobby Gene Craig transitioned from this world on Friday March 28, 2025 having attained the age of 97 years 99 days.
Bobby was born in Elkville, IL on December 19, 1927 to Joseph and Emma Craig.
Bobby was surrounded by boundless love throughout his life. He is survived by his cherished daughter, Colleen Shupe, and caring son-in-law, Allen Shupe; his son, Bradley Craig, and daughter-in-law, Brenda Craig. His legacy continues to bloom through his beloved grandchildren — Nathan (Casey) Shupe, Leah (Corey) Helbig, Jennifer (Jeremiah) Dunmeyer. He also leaves behind his dearly loved Great Grand children  Blair Helbig, Jace Shupe, Olivia Helbig, and Kennedy Helbig.   Also left behind are his adoring cat, Jaguar and faithful dog Teddy.
He is reunited in passing with his dear mother, Emma (Porter) Craig; his beloved father, Joseph Daniel Craig; and his adored wife, Joan Craig.  His memory remains a shining beacon of love within the hearts of all those privileged to have known him.
Bobby was a graduate of Elkville High School where excelled in basketball and football.  He attended Elkville Christian Church with his parents through his youth and was also where he and Joan were united in marriage.  They began their life together in Du Quoin where they then became members of the  First Christian Church of Du Quoin.  They were blessed with 58 years of marriage.
He volunteered as a local cub scout den leader and was a past member of the Du Quoin Optimist Club.
Significant among Bobby's many accomplishments was his service in the U.S. Army towards the end of World War II. Upon his return, he utilized the GI bill to attend SIUC. In seeking stability for his loved ones, he left college to pursue a lasting career in the local coal mining industry, where he dutifully contributed over 40 years of his life.
Bobby, together with his wife Joan, held a passion for collecting antiques and meticulously restoring their beautiful Victorian home.   He enjoyed filling his home with laughter and love during festive occasions with his children, grandchildren and extended family as well as many special friends.  Later in life he and Joan made a move to the Shupe Farm in rural Northern Jackson County to be near their daughter and son-in-law which was also the same area where he spent most of his youth.
As we mourn the loss of this remarkable man, we celebrate the love he shared, the lives he touched, and the legacy he leaves behind.
