Donald Adcock, 86, was born in Du Bois, Illinois, on July 22, 1934. He was the son of Herbert and Audra Fae (Lynch) Adcock. He died July 15, 2021, in Elmhurst, IL. He married Joann Davison on April 14, 1957. Donald received a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in English and a minor in Mathematics. He began his career in education as a teacher librarian at Tamaroa Community High school in 1956. After a two-year stint in the U. S. Army, he returned to his teaching position in Tamaroa. He continued to work on a Masters Degree in Education at Southern Illinois University with an emphasis on school librarianship. He completed his Masters Degree in 1964 and moved to Glen Ellyn Illinois, where he was hired to establish a school library program for the nine schools in Glen Ellyn District #41. He spent the next twenty-five years as director of Library Services in Glen Ellyn, expanding classroom libraries into centralized libraries, and then from primarily print collections to multi-media libraries and added the new technology resources accessed by computers. In 1977, Don received the Illinois Association of School Librarians Honor Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to school library media services in the state of Illinois. Since he had been a pioneer in the development of elementary school libraries, he shared his knowledge about the development of school libraries by authoring articles in many publications. Don also wrote reviews for publications such as School Library Journal and Reference Books Annual. He delivered a paper at the International Federation of Library Associations in 1983 on the principles and problems of school libraries participating in library networks. It was published in the March 1983 issue of Australian School Librarian Journal and was translated in Japan and published in Gakko Toshokan (School Library) by the Japan School Library Association. While working in Glen Ellyn, he also served as an adjunct professor for the National College of Education West Suburban Campus teaching the core courses in school librarianship in its graduate program. Donald had served as a member of the Illinois State Library Committee (ISLAC), and as an adviser to many committees of the Illinois State Board of Education pertaining to school libraries and certification requirements for school librarians. He also was selected to join national leaders in the school library profession as a member of the committee advising the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science on the role of school library Media Programs in Networking. He also worked part time as a reference librarian in the library at the College of DuPage. During 2008, he co-authored a series of information literacy skills books for young adults with his daughter Beth, that was published by Heinemann Library in 2009. In late October of 2015, the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) presented Donald C. Adcock with the 2015 Illinois School Library Media Association Lifetime Membership Award. The Lifetime Membership Award is highly selective and has only been awarded at the discretion of the ISLMA board three times, to honor an individual for faithful, exceptional service to the association and to school librarianship. The previous month, Adcock was inducted as an Illinois Library Luminary. A tireless advocate for school libraries and librarians for over fifty years, Adcock spent twenty-five years as director of Library Services in Glen Ellyn Public School District. After leaving the Glen Ellyn schools, he joined the staff of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) as Coordinator for Program Support. He later became the interim director of AASL. After leaving AASL, he became a university supervisor for the school library program at Dominican University before becoming the interim Director of the School Library Program at Dominican. Donald retired in 2015. Donald was also a family man. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed traveling to places in the United States and around the world with his wife Joann. During the summers, he enjoyed the time when his grandchildren would come and stay, often taking them on adventures to local sites. The grandchildren still have fond memories of these adventures, especially Blackberry Farms, Cantigny Park and Springfield. Summer vacations and holidays were often spent with his brothers and sisters in Southern Illinois. Even to the end, Donald was an avid reader and researcher.
