With deep sadness, yet unwavering faith, we announce the passing of Dorothy "Elaine" Timpner Vancil, who went to be with the Lord on May 26, 2026 at the age of 91, after a life filled with family, immense love, and tons laughter.
Elaine was born on September 20, 1934, to William and Laura Timpner in Pinckneyville, Illinois. The youngest of four children, she was raised on the Timpner family farm, where she learned the values of hard work, faith, and devotion to family that would shape her entire life. She was baptized into the Christian faith at an early age at the Pinckneyville Church of Christ, beginning a lifelong walk with the Lord.
Elaine attended Pinckneyville High School, when fate led her to meet John "Sam" Vancil during a Perry County after-school activity. He would become the love of her life. They were united in marriage on August 9, 1952, at St. Paul's Church in Pinckneyville, beginning a beautiful partnership rooted in faith, joy, and enduring love. Their lighthearted bond and deep affection were a blessing to all who knew them.
During Sam's service in the United States Army, they were stationed in Texas and later Washington, where they welcomed their first child, Deborah. After his honorable discharge, they returned home to Pinckneyville, where their family continued to grow with the arrivals of David, Roger (Dennis), Darryl, and Denise. Together, they built a home on Bailey Lane, where Elaine devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising her children in a home centered on their Christian faith. Her greatest joy was her family, and she faithfully nurtured each generation with grace and care.
Elaine was an active and devoted member of Sunfield United Methodist Church and the Sunfield United Methodist Women. Through her service, fellowship, and quiet acts of kindness, she touched many lives within the Sunfield and Du Quoin communities. She was also a member of Home and Community Extensions (HCE) and the Pyramid Painters, where she enjoyed connecting with others and finding ways to continue giving back to her community.
Elaine had a remarkable gift for toll painting, a craft she pursued with both skill and passion. Many evenings were spent carefully creating intricate works of art, each piece reflecting her patience, creativity, and attention to detail. Her family treasures these creations, which will forever serve as reminders of her loving hands and joyful spirit.
Elaine is survived by her five children, nine grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren, carrying forward her legacy of faith and love. She is also survived by her sisters, Lavonne Bathon of Pinckneyville and Betty (Dean) Hammann of Chesterfield, Missouri.
Her children include Deborah (Dan) Bandy of Herrin; David (Debbie) Vancil of Du Quoin; Dennis Vancil of Du Quoin; Darryl (Beth) Vancil of Du Quoin; and Denise (Tim) Smith of Du Quoin.
She was blessed with grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought her immeasurable pride and joy: Laura & Tony McLaughlin (Annabelle, Lillian, Bennett, and Flynn); Jennifer & Tim Craft (Cy and Ava); Ross & Jane Bandy (Austyn); John & Jessi Vancil (Sam, Josh, and Laney); Rebekah & Derrick Seabaugh (Keegan, Annika, and Mikayla); Mindy & Brian Tackitt (Lincoln, Ledger, and Lankston); Bailey & Heather Vancil (Max and Hailey); Brooke Vancil & Weston Kabat (Jake); and Andrew & Summer Smith (Elaina), along with many other dear relatives and friends.
Elaine was preceded in death by her beloved husband Sam; her parents, William and Laura Timpner; her brother William "Bill" Timpner and his wife Helen; her brother and sister-in-laws Albert Bathon, Bill and Norma Vancil and Howard and Nellie Vancil.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find peace in knowing that Elaine now rests in the presence of her Lord and Savior and was greeted by Sam in the warmest embrace. Her life was a testament to steadfast faith, unconditional love, and the enduring strength of family.
A celebration of Elaine's life and faith will be held at Sunfield Community Church on Thursday, June 4, 2026 at 11am with Pastor Carman Wuebbels officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation at the church from 9am to 11am prior to the service. Following, she will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin next to Sam, where they will rest together in eternal peace.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sunfield Community Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
