Obituary

James S. Getzie, 97, of Pinckneyville, passed away at 4:03 A.M., Thursday, April 13, 2023 at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
Jim was born in Dowell, IL on the morning of March 23, 1926, the only son of Steve and Minnie (nee Fredericks) Getzie. He was well known in his young life for his ability to play the trumpet, performing in many bands in the area. He was also known for his shooting skills and catching big bass. Hunting and fishing were his passion. He was a veteran of World War II, serving his country in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. He was awarded the bronze star for his action in crossing the Rhine River in Germany. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of the National Rifleman's Association. After the war, he worked for a brief time as assistant cashier at the Elkville State Bank. After another brief period as operator of the coal separation plant for the Hallidayboro Coal Company, he returned to music and played in numerous bands in Illinois and Missouri, including the Griff Williams orchestra when it was the stage band at the Du Quoin State Fair. His love for guns and shooting won out and in 1950 he moved to Golden, CO, where he owned and operated G & H Firearms, where he became known as a builder of fine long range elk and deer rifles. Also known at that time for his skill as a trap shooter, he set a record at the Table Mountain Gun Club that still stands today. In 1972, he sold his business and returned to Illinois, where he met and married Deloris "Dee" (McDonnough) Markotay on November 4, 1977.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters - Julia Refka, Mary Getzie, and Emma Epplin.
