Obituary

James L. "Jim" Rice, born March 18, 1947, in Du Quoin, Illinois, passed away on June 12, 2026, at the age of 79.
Jim was the only son of Joe Rice and Marie (Campanella) Rice.  He married Valerie West.  Together they shared many happy years and had one daughter, Dawn (Rice) Galbraith of Du Quoin, Illinois.
In 1967, Jim was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a Spec. 4th Class Combat Engineer.  During his military service, he received several medals and commendations in recognition of his dedication and service.
Following his honorable discharge, Jim worked at Consol No. 2 Mine.  He later joined Southern Illinois Petrol, where he worked alongside his father-in-law and helped operate the business for much of his career.  He eventually worked for Brinks until his retirement, after which he devoted much of his time to enjoying life as a proud grandfather.
Jim was a true car enthusiast.  He loved restoring and working on his muscle cars, driving them, attending car shows, and spending time at the drag strip, where he occasionally raced.
A lifetime member of the Du Quoin American Legion and a lifetime member of Du Quoin V.F.W., Jim also proudly served for many years with the V.F.W. Honor Guard until declining health no longer allowed him to participate.  He was deeply committed to honoring fellow veterans and their service.
Jim cherished time spent with family and friends at his property, where gatherings were filled with conversation, laughter, and good memories.  He enjoyed sharing stories, spending time outdoors, and relaxing with friends.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Dawn (Rice) Galbraith and husband Cale of Du Quoin, Illinois; three grandchildren, Alec Galbraith, Addison Galbraith, and Sydney Galbraith, from Du Quoin, Illinois along with extended family members and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Valerie (West) Rice; his parents, Joe and Marie (Campanella) Rice; and his Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Vallie and Harriet (Thill) West.
Jim was of the Catholic faith and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Deacon Tony Kellerman officiating.
Friends may call from 9 A.M. until the time of service on Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Du Quoin, Illinois.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the Army National Guard.
Memorial donations may be made to Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Jim will be remembered for his patriotism, strong work ethic, devotion to family, love of cars, and the many friendships he cultivated throughout his life.  His memory will be treasured by all who knew and loved him.
