Jon D. Schwengel, 80, of Du Quoin, passed away at 4:13 A.M., Friday, January 26, 2024 at his residence.
Jon was born March 30, 1943, the son of Wesley M. and Mary E. (Conley) Schwengel. He was born and raised in Champaign, Il. He grew up on a farm with loving parents and two older brothers. He met Ann Greathouse while they were students at SIU. They were married in 1966, and soon moved to Du Quoin to build a life together.
Jon's life reflected a strong work ethic and a love of farming. In addition to farming his own land, Jon worked in farm management, livestock leasing, equipment sales, and farm building sales.
In his later years, he enjoyed raising beef cattle with his friend John Vancil in their J & J Cattle Company.
In earlier years, Jon was involved in several civic organizations and served on various community boards. He was a board member for Five Star Industries and Du Quoin Boys Club. He was also a member of Farm Bureau.
Having the heart of a servant, Jon tirelessly ministered in his church. He was an associate pastor in the Community of Christ Church in Thompsonville, IL. He taught classes, served on committees at the local and mission center level, and was very involved in the food pantry.
Jon's family had the honor of receiving his unconditional love and learning from his stalwart example. You could always find Jon playing with the kids. He loved to tease and aggravate which allowed him to engrave his name on so many hearts. He could bring a quick smile with a witty comment, and if you were lucky enough to receive a hug - you knew exactly how much he loved you. He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, two children - Erika Lynn Clements and husband Joe of Baxter, TN and Jon Andrew Schwengel and wife Emily of Portage, MI, five grandchildren - Ellie Whitlock and husband Carson of Knoxville, TN, Jake Clements of Baxter, TN, Grace Schwengel, Caroline Schwengel, and Emma Schwengel, all of Portage, MI, one great granddaughter - Annie Whitlock, one great grandchild on the way, one brother - Marc Schwengel and wife Yvonne of Opdyke, IL, one sister-in-law - Sharon Schwengel of Tuscola, and special friend - Tammy Austin of Keenes, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother - Phillip Schwengel.
