Obituary

Kathryn "Kate" Judy Dale, 54, of Du Quoin, IL, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 29, 2024 after a year and a half hard fought battle with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a very rare cancer.
She was born on May 1, 1970 in Rhode Island but moved to California when she was one year old.  She grew up in San Diego where she graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Communications.  Kate also graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a Master of Arts in Teaching and a Master of Arts in English.  She then went on to become a lifelong educator.
Kate had a passion for life and she had an innate ability to make everyone around her laugh almost instantly.  Her genuine interest in others and her curiosity about everything around her made her stand out.  She moved to Du Quoin just over 20 years ago and found her home.  Kate loved being an active volunteer and supporter of the Du Quoin Youth Club.  She spent countless years on WDQN every Saturday morning.  She also taught English, Spanish, Journalism, and Speech at Coulterville High School for 15 years while also being the Beta Club sponsor.  Kate also taught Public Speaking at Rend Lake College where she loved the challenges of educating the next generation.
Kate's earlier years consisted of waitressing and bartending which she continued throughout her life at many events.  Kate is remembered by countless students and colleagues as a caring influence who was not afraid to speak her mind and always put students first.  She cared not just for their academics but for them as young people finding their way.
Kate was preceded in death by her father, Donald Dale, sister, April Seal, and brother-in-law, Martin Shupp.  She will be greatly missed by her two children Frank Dale and Elizabeth Bird, her partner of 18 years Nicole Heape, and her 3 step-children Braden (Whitney and baby Sawyer) Heape, Joshua Heape and Lauren Heape.  Kate is also survived by her mother Catherine Dale, siblings Christopher (Christina) Dale, Susanna Shupp, and Marianne (Robert) Spiller.  Her in-laws Mary (Melvin) Miller and John (Patti) Lyoch, and Natasha (Scott) Ford, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
At a later date, a Celebration of Life will be held in Kate's memory.  Donations in her name may be made to the Du Quoin Youth Club.
Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin is in charge of arrangements.
