Marvin D. "Smitty" Smith, 81, of Mt. Vernon, formerly of Tamaroa, passed away at 11:45 A.M., Thursday, February 2, 2023 at the White Oak Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.
Smitty had been a police officer since 1973. He worked as a deputy sheriff for the Perry County Sheriff's Department, a police officer for the Village of Tamaroa and chief of police at Braidwood, IL in the 1980's.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tamaroa, the Sheriff's Association, the Goldwing Road Riders Association and the Policeman's Hall of Fame.
Marvin was born February 24, 1941 in Du Quoin, IL, the son of Everett L. and Eileen H. (Heape) Smith.
Marvin is survived by many friends and a special friend - Carolyn Brake.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Debra.
There will be no public services.
Friends may make memorials to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and will be accepted at the funeral home.
