Robert J. "Bob" Conte, 80, of Du Quoin, Illinois, passed away on September 9, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born on January 22, 1945, Bob lived a life defined by his love of sports, his devotion to family, and his service to his community.
A standout athlete from a young age, Bob helped lead Du Quoin High School to memorable victories on the basketball court, including a 1963 game where he scored five points in the final 80 seconds to seal a thrilling 50–48 win over Carbondale. His talent and determination carried him into professional baseball, where he spent two seasons as a right-handed pitcher in the minor leagues, playing for the Cedar Rapids Red Raiders, Tampa Tarpons, and Peninsula Grays—all farm teams for the Cincinnati Reds organization. Bob signed his professional baseball contract in 1963, fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing the sport he loved at the next level.
After an injury brought his playing career to an end, Bob's passion for sports never faded. He turned to officiating and went on to become one of the most respected referees in Illinois. Over more than three decades, he officiated 28 regional basketball tournaments, 7 sectional tournaments, and 4 super-sectional tournaments. He was honored to work the IHSA Boys' Class A state finals in 1979 and 1980, and the Class AA finals in 1981, including the championship game when Quincy High School capped its undefeated season with a win over Proviso East. Bob also officiated the IHSA State Football Championship for three consecutive years from 1991 to 1993, further showcasing his dedication to Illinois high school athletics. In addition to his work on the court and field, Bob served as president of the local Khoury League baseball organization, helping to shape the lives of countless young athletes. To crown his officiating career, Bob was elected to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2000, and this year he will be posthumously inducted into the Du Quoin High School Hall of Fame on September 26th, honoring his lifelong impact on the community and the sports he loved.
Outside of athletics, Bob built a long and respected career with Consol Coal Company at Burning Star Mines #2, #3, and #4, where he dedicated 26 years as a safety supervisor. His leadership and attention to detail helped ensure the safety and well-being of those he worked alongside.
Bob was also a member of the First Christian Church of Du Quoin.
Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Barron Conte; his two sons, Bob Conte and wife Trina Conte, and Brad Conte and wife Michele Conte; and his brother, Gene Conte. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Brandon Conte and wife Kelcie Conte, Brie Roland and husband Brandon Roland, Nick Conte and wife Ciera Conte, Garrett Conte, and Zach Conte. Bob's legacy continues through his seven great-grandchildren: Alivia, Aubree, James, Jordan, and Walker Conte; and Keegan and Indie Roland, all of whom brought him endless pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wante and Mildred Conte.
