Ronald Scott Darnell, 66, of Du Quoin, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on April 23, 2026, at 10:28 a.m., with his family and friends by his side. He was born on January 22, 1960, in Hartford, Kentucky, to Melvin L. and Dorothy L. (Watson) Darnell.
Ron was a dedicated public servant who proudly worked for the City of Du Quoin. He retired as Director of the Water Department after many years of service. Ron began his career as a health and codes officer and, through hard work and commitment, rose through the ranks to lead the Water Department for several years before his retirement. He loved Du Quoin and took great pride in serving its residents on a daily basis.  Ron was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin and Knights of Columbus.
Ron married the love of his life, Linda (Routon) Darnell, on October 24, 2020. Together they shared a bond built on love, companionship, and devotion.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin L. and Dorothy L. Darnell, and his sisters, Vicky Loraine Darnell and Malinda Kay Darnell.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Darnell; his children, Matt Darnell (Jenn Darnell), Matt's former wife, Briana Klein, and John Darnell (Angela Darnell); his stepdaughter, Elizabeth Hughes (Adam Hughes); his brother, Chris Darnell (Kathy Darnell); his sister, Elaine "Missy" Dawson (Jeff Dawson); his cherished grandchildren, Macie Darnell, Levi Brown, Jordyn Darnell, Mason Hughes, Maddie Darnell, Bradyn Darnell, and Ava Hughes; his Aunt Joan Worsham, his faithful dog, Stormy; his former wife and lifelong friend, Krystal Aken; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ron had a deep love for fishing and found peace and joy on the water. Whether casting a line alone or spending time fishing with family and friends, those moments were among his most treasured.
He will be remembered for his love of family, his strength, and the lasting impact he had on those who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
