Steven Alan Hagston, 61, of Benton, IL, passed away in his home on Thursday, June 11, 2026. Steve was born on October 26, 1964 to Sharon (Tuthill) and the late Lyle Hagston. As a boy he was baptized at Tamaroa Christian Church.
Steve proudly served in the United States Army, and was stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He served overseas in Operation Desert Storm. Steve had attained the rank of Spc. E-4. He was a member of the VFW. His military service reflected his dedication, courage, and commitment to those around him.
He was a loving and devoted father to three girls, Kandace, Krystle, and Ashley. He loved spending time with them, especially playing card games. Outside of work and family, he was an avid gun collector and enjoyed spending time on his boat.
Steve never met a stranger and always had a story to tell. With a mischievous grin and a quick wit, he loved teasing the people he cared about most. Those who knew him best understood that his playful ribbing was one of the ways he showed his love. He especially enjoyed keeping his mother, Sharon, on her toes and made it a point to talk with her every day. Steve's stories, laughter, and larger-than-life personality brought joy to those around him, and he will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
After his military service, he continued his commitment to serving others as a correctional officer. He dedicated many years to the profession before retiring as Sergeant in 2017. Whether in uniform or on the job, he was known for his strong work ethic, sense of responsibility, and unwavering devotion to those around him.
Steve found love and companionship with his fiancée, Michelle. They were introduced through dear friends. Michelle lived in the Philippines, where Steve enjoyed visiting. Their love brought him great happiness, and he was eagerly anticipating an upcoming trip later this summer.
Steve is survived by his beloved fiancée, Michelle; his daughters, Kandace, Krystle, and Ashley; his mother, Sharon Hagston; his brother, Jarrod Hagston; his sister and brother-in-law, Audra and Gary Winter; his niece, Shea and her family; his nephews, Tyler and Jacob and their families; his best friend and cousin, Mike Martie and his wife, Edelyn; along with many other dear family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lyle Hagston; infant sister, Alexia Kay; paternal grandparents Raymond and Ruby Hagston; and maternal grandparents Frank and Verna Tuthill.
